Basic Mathematics Skills for Years 1 to 6

Good foundations are vital in mathematics. Without the basic skills, it is like having rungs missing from a ladder - it makes it much more difficult for students to make progress.

Often, children are held back because they haven't got the stepping stones of times tables, carrying and borrowing, telling the time, etc. In this section, you will find worksheets and resources to help make sure that those foundation skills aren't taken for granted.

The topics covered are mainly taught in Key Stage 1 (years 1 and 2) and the first part of Key Stage 2 (Year 3) . . . but they never go out of fashion!

Using Numbers - This section looks at place value, counting and number properties

Add and Subtract - Understand carrying and borrowing

Multiply and Divide - Learn about times tables, long multiplication and sharing

Shapes - Revise your knowledge of 2-D and 3-D shapes

Time and Money - Take a trip into clock faces and coins

How to do Fractions - Start building the foundations of fraction knowledge
